By which the first light opened up
The field of all creation.

Or tablets of wood or clay
Are signifiers: point beyond themselves
To that which Plato would have recognised.
The glory is in the signified –
Delight is in the object, not the sign.
Let him who has ears to hear
Discern the word of truth
The word of life.
