The Way to Midian



Behind – the covenant sea
     the drowning shore
before – the river of promise
     and the twelve stones (twice)
across the white desert
     (the starving sand) the rocks …

I have been this way before –
     I know – so let us go
with joy into the silence
     and the thirst, for this

is the place of miracles.

Moses led the people of Israel across the Red Sea and turned south.
